15 Million Dollar Judgment For Drunk Driving Deaths

A drunk driver killed 3 people on October 6, 2007 in a Gulfport Car Wreck.  Brad Downs, Samantha Downs, and Chris Dafoe all died in the Gulfport car wreck.

Deborah Stewart was the drunk driver.  The families of the victims filed suit against the bar owner that served Ms. Stewart alcohol just before the wreck.  According to authorities, Stewart was “visibly intoxicated” at the bar and they kept serving her drinks.

Mississippi has what is called a “dram shop” law.  This means that a bar owner and the bartender can be responsible for a car accident in Mississippi if they keep giving an obviously drunk person alcohol.

While the judgment was for $15 million, it was more of a “moral victory” as the bar owner didn’t have insurance.

This is yet another terrible tragedy for Mississippi.

I don’t know if the people in this wreck were wearing seat belts or not and it might not have mattered since this wreck was so bad.  But, seat belt do matter in most accidents.   They can save your life.
